MEETING NOTES AND ACTION ITEMS:
- Donise contacted Tavis Smiley, BET, and is waiting for his return call.
- Nina Tottenberg is on vacation and will not be returning until the end of August. In addition, Tottenberg is getting married in November. The team needs to confirm when this is as it may conflict with the date of the Seminar.
- Stephen Barr has not responded to our request for him to attend the seminar. Mike Causey has assured us that Stephen will be in touch. (NOTE: The team decided that Stephen Barr may not be an appropriate panelist/speaker for the morning session. If Stephen Barr does respond, we will recruit his participation for a breakout workshop. Potentially "Federal Marketing Resources" or "Website Marketing".)
- As of the August 7 meeting, David Gergen has not responded to our invitation. Pat McGinnis has contacted Gergen on our behalf.
- Suzanne will be in touch with David McMannus this week.
- Suzanne will contact Christy Haubegger, president and publisher Latina magazine, as a potential keynote speaker. The team will be thinking of backups if Haubegger is unable to attend the Seminar.
- Bill Halter may not be with the Social Security Administration when the new administration comes to office. We need to have a backup for Halter.
- The team agreed that Bob Winsel, chief operating officer for IRS, would be a good panelist. Donise will send Winsel an invitation to participate on the afternoon panel.
- The team decided to move the Social Security Administration panelist to the afternoon session and the IRS panelist to the morning session. The IRS panelist will address E-Gov.
- We have confirmed that Aaron Pressman will be a panelist. We sent him a thank you letter confirming his attendance.
- The team agreed that, if necessary, we may need to increase the size of the panels from four to five participants.
- The team created a list of additional or potential panelist we may want to contact or consider. These panelists include:
- Diane Sawyer
- Cokie Roberts
- Lark McCarthy
- Gwen Eifel
- Donise will contact Linda Whitsel and ask her assistance in getting in touch with Gwen Eifel and Lark McCarthy. McCarthy will serve as a backup for Eifel, if Eifel is unable to attend the Seminar. NOTE: Whitsel has a personal relationship with Eifel and McCarthy and should be able to assist us in contacting these two individuals.
- Pat Wood will contact Kathleen Delaski about doing a workshop on "Website Marketing".
- Donise will follow up with Judy Wells and Brian Friel from Planet.gov to invite them to do the workshop on "Writing for the Web".
- Pat Wood will ask June Malina and George Matyjewicz to participate with the workshop "Website Marketing".
- Sherri Burns will find a moderator and speaker from GAO and GSA for the "Federal Resources" workshop.
- Pat Wood will contact Lee Wexel to confirm and verify the rooms that are available at the Natcher Center.
- Suzanne will contact the Social Security Administration and Gallop about leading the "Measuring Your Success" workshop.
- Donise will send an invitation to Les Potter to lead the session on "Communication Strategy". Potter has written a detailed communication plan and is a member of the International Association of Business Communicators.
- Carol Harvey will contact a member of the Las Vegas Federal Executive Board to serve as a moderator.
- Pat Wood will contact Leanne Jenkins.
- Carol Harvey will contact the National Transportation Safety Board and FEMA.
- The team will confirm with David Stark the intended role of FCC at the seminar and if FCC should still be contacted to participate.
- The team agreed to change the title of the afternoon session to "Making US Look Good: Telling Our Story".
- Carol Harvey will follow up with Paula Schneider of the Census Bureau.
- Carol Harvey will contact Tim Clark, Government Executive, to serve as a moderator.
- The team needs to revisit co-sponsorship. The Senior Fellows Program has agreed to sponsor the coffee break.
- Donise will contact Sally Lee at NIH to obtain the cost for using the Natcher Center facilities.
- Sherri Burns, Donise and Lee Wexel will serve on the Exhibit/Trade Show team. The team will finalize the packet of material that will be sent to potential exhibitors and the cost to exhibit.
- Simone will follow up with George Mason about editing the tape from the 1999 Seminar. The tape will be condensed to one hour. We plan to play the tape in the morning as attendees are registering.
- The team decided to remove Ron Sanders from the potential list of speakers for the "Communication" Workshop.
REMINDERS (note: items that we don’t want to lose from meeting to meeting will be contained in the reminder section):
- Morley or Pat McGinniss should highlight the availability of E-Gov in their speaking points. This will tie in with the focus of the keynote speakers (Communications for the New Millennium).
- Create materials to promote and educate colleagues about the benefits of joining FCN
- Ask Rich Kellet, GSA, to analyze FCN database to provide estimate of federal workers reached by FCN.
- Consider inviting FCC as a guest speaker to talk about changes in the communication world.
- We drafted a tentative list of organizations we wanted to invite to exhibit. The organizations included:
- Seminar Sponsors and Presenters
- Government Executive
- Planetgov.gov
- Federal Times
- First Gov
- Washintonpost.com
- AOL
- FAS
- Academia (needs further investigation)
- FCN
- Senior Fellows Program
- Simone will work with journalism schools and invite them to attend the December seminar. Team members suggested Simone contact: National Association of Black Journalists, National Association of Hispanic Journalists and association for college editors.
