Alert 1
Editors of the Federal Editors Network

October 1, 1996

Housekeeping
Hello, fellow editors. This is your first mailing after the organizational meeting we held September 17. Enclosed please find an updated database list of those who have joined the Federal Editors Network, a summary of who and what we are, the minutes of the September 17 meeting, and a press list from the Vice President's Office.

We will soon be sending out the first of our weekly Editor Alert bulletins by fax, which will consist of all sorts of data you can use in your publications. Remember, this is YOUR network -- if you want to see more/less of something, have ideas for something different, or want to let us know of an event you'd like us to cover, let us know!

For those of you who have signed up for subgroups (a list is enclosed), please keep me aware of any meetings you hold. I'd like to keep all the editors informed of when subgroup meetings happen and what came out of them.

I have brought the editors database up to date, but of course there will constantly be changes. Please keep me apprised of any changes to your work status. More specifically, could the following people please give me phone and fax numbers so I can be sure you receive the weekly Alerts:

Tony Hendrick (HHS), Tom Kell (NAGC), Sandy Kamiser (HHS), Robin McMacken (NASA), and Muridith Winder (DOD).

*******

A last note: someone left a pair of glasses at the organizational meeting on September 17 in the Truman Room of the White House Conference Center. They are a plastic pair of prescription glasses housed in a burgundy case with the letter A. Please call me if these are yours!

Thank you! Remember to watch for the Editors Alert, coming soon by fax!

Federal Editors Network Notes from Organizational Meeting, September 17, 1996

Accomplishments of federal editors conference 9/17:

  • Obtained White House press list (enclosed) from Lorraine Voles, Vice President's Communication Director. Send your newsletters to list for higher visibility.
  • Heads up: Obtained clearance to request a paper press interview by Vice President Gore (via Q&As). Starting after December, this will be an opportunity for editors to send questions into Gore's office that will be answered and returned, which you can then publish in your newsletters. Note: more information will be given on this -- please hold off requests until then.
  • Formed editor sub-groups to work on specific parts of network (see enclosed list -- please call lead editor if you'd like to join an existing group or call Carrie Carnes to begin a new one).
  • Received advance/embargoed copies of book released 9/20 The Best Kept Secrets in Government by Al Gore. Note: we sent out copies of the book to the 160 editors who were on the database a month ago, plus we handed out copies to the 100 people who attended the 9/17 organizational meeting. If you recently joined the network and/or have not received a copy and would like to, call me and I will send one to you. Only one per editor, please -- supplies are limited.
  • More clearly defined goals of networkÊ(see ideas from break-out groups and vision/goals of network).
  • National Performance Review material can be republished with no copyright in any of your newsletters as it is part of the public domain. For example, the appendix material in the back of The Best Kept Secrets in Government is a great place to find and publish reinvention stories about your department. Also check out the NPR home page at www.npr.gov.
  • Updated federal editors database (currently 300 names and counting). Please check your name to ensure correct information. If it needs to be updated, send info to Carrie Carnes.

Please note there are a few people whose phone or fax numbers I still don't have. I will not be able to fax out the weekly Editor's Alert to you until I get that information from you. Thanks!
