Alert 3
Hammer Time!
October 18, 1997

This is the first of the weekly Alerts you will begin receiving by fax. Eventually we'll be using a list server (by email) and have postings on our web site (the information technology group is busy working on that task!), but for now faxing is the easiest way to get our news out. The Alert will serve to give the members of the Federal Editors Network the latest scoop on Hammer Awards, conferences, Network news (including syndicated articles and minutes from Network group meetings), and NPR goings-on.

Hammer Time!

  • A little history...the Hammer Award is the Vice President's answer to yesterday's government and its $400 hammer. Fittingly, the award consists of a $6.00 hammer, a ribbon, and a note from Vice President Gore, all in an aluminum frame. About 600 Hammer Awards have been presented to teams comprised of federal employees, state and local employees, and citizens who are working to build a better government based on four reinvention principles: Cutting Red Tape, Putting Customers First, Empowering Employees to Get Results, and Cutting Back to Basics.
  • Based on numerous requests for advance information on Hammer Award recipients, this will be a regular column in the Alert.
  • Check out the Hammer Award winners at NPR's web site: http://www.npr.gov. Click on "Awards," then "Hammer Awards," then "Hammer Awards Winners."

Following is the name of the agency and team to be awarded, where and when it will happen, and a contact name and number. Please note this information is subject to change. If no contact name is given, call Jerry Nikolaus or Denise Clyburn, NPR, at (202) 632-0150.
