Our network includes communicators
of all kinds (about half are editors and the other half are writers,
public affairs specialists, A/V specialists, web site maintainers,
and others). Because of this variety, the Resources and Information
Technology group suggested that we change our name to reflect
all our members. We checked with all the team leaders and they
agree with the change, but before we rename, we wish to hear
your opinion first. So e mail or call and let Carrie Carnes know
what you think. Unless we hear a majority of dissent by November
7, our new name will be the Federal Communicators Network.
Network by E-mail -- Thanks to our inter-agency agreement
with GSA, we've got a list server that will soon be up and running!
For those of you who would rather receive The Alert and other
messages by e-mail, you will be able to e-mail directly to this
site to automatically receive our notices as soon as they go
out (whereas faxing takes about four days to reach all of you).
Stay tuned for more details.
Free Exhibits Booth -- The National Association of
Government Communicators have graciously offered us a complimentary
exhibit space during their 20th Annual Communications School
December 3 - 6 in Austin, TX. For more information on this conference,
contact NAGC at (703) 519 3902 or check out their web site at
http://www.nagc.com/. Please let me know if you will be attending
this conference -- I will be going and would love a little help
staffing our exhibit booth and signing up new members to our
network during conference breaks.
Public Service Announcements -- Look for a packet you
will be soon be receiving by the National Cancer Institute with
public service announcements on smoking cessation. They ask that
editors consider printing the PSAs in their publications as space
allows so readers can order free booklets to help them improve
their health and avoid cancer. I have given NCI a set of mailing
labels from the Network so you will receive more information
on this. If you're interested in getting on their mailing list
to receive new PSAs as they are printed, please contact Jana
Johnston, Health Promotions Branch, Bldg 31, Room 10A03, Bethesda,
Md, 20892, at (301) 496-6667 or fax (301) 402-0894 with your
name and address.
Send your newsletters to NPR! --Some of you have already
been doing this, but I would appreciate it if you please send
me any of your newsletters that contain reinvention stories to
my attention at NPR, 750 17th Street, NW, Suite 200, Washington,
DC, 20006. Thank you in advance.
Great Resource Guide -- You will be receiving (or have
already) the latest NPR resource goals booklet, called Reaching
Public Goals: Managing Government for Results. It has been a
big hit for the recipients, and I thought you might find it useful.
Due to overlap in mailing lists, some of you may receive more
than one copy. If this happens, please pass one on to another
change agent in your organization. Thank you!
Heads up --the roll-out of the Blue Pages from GSA
is scheduled for 11/15 in Washington, DC. The new Blue Pages
will be a phone book similar to the Yellow Pages you'll be able
to look up a number by services and things, not by organizations.
For example, with the new Blue Pages, a person could find information
about passports (formerly under "S" for State Department,
causing confusion) under "P."
